Summer Sampler: Print, Draw, Sculpt 21SAM6-1

Interested in dipping your toe into a few different art forms? Join us for this three-day sampler and learn about the Art Colony studios and classes.

July 1 – Cyanotypes

Create a series of prints using the cyanotype method, which is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Cyanotypes use a solution of iron compounds rather than a thick emulsion, that can be applied to paper, fabric or wood. No need for an enlarger in the dark room, the best source of light is the warm summer sun! Students will create several prints while trying variations with different matrices and substrates (cloth, paper, etc). Students will also learn about proper handling of the chemistry if they should want to recreate it at home.

July 2 – Drawing on Artists’ Point

Drawing doesn’t need to be intimidating. Not only is it the foundation to all other art forms, it can be fun! Take a walk down to Artists’ Point with Andy and explore the terrain through a series of loose drawing techniques. Through fun prompts and simple exercises students will loosen up and leave their inhibitions about what a drawing is, or should be, behind. By the end, students will have a greater knowledge of what drawing can be and how it can enrich our observations of the world.

July 3 – Scotch off the Roll

Participate in a unique opportunity to engage in a public art experience. Students will work collaboratively using a low-tech process of packing tape body molds, wrapping each other with the tape to create the mold, and then cutting it off to finish it. Get mummified and explore the create a public art project that will be temporarily placed in downtown Grand Marais.
