Stacking and Carving

Students will gain a better understanding of precision throwing and trimming techniques, explore stacking vessels to create larger forms, and experiment with surface decoration, specifically carving.  Andy will cover such topics as hand positions, clay consistency, wall thickness, and more, to help students learn to throw more consistently and accurately. Trimming is also a critical step in refining complex forms, so students will learn where to leave extra clay to provide support and how to best remove excess weight. Finally, students will experiment with carving and create a gridded surface on vessels to guide in design. Prerequisite: students must be able to throw a ten-inch even walled cylinder.
