Experiments with Porcelain Paperclay

Paperclay is a very forgiving material that has been widely used in the contemporary ceramic practice over the years both in sculptural work and functional pieces. Shiyuan will introduce the properties of paperclay with an emphasis on experimenting with various construction methods such as pinch pot, slab, coil, slip-trailing, and dipping found objects to explore the possibilities of incorporating paperclay in your own practice. The class will also touch on the topic of using paperclay to repair at different stages of the clay building process. Daily demonstrations, discussions of contemporary artworks, and individual conversations will be included. Prerequisite: students must have foundational clay experience.
