Terra Preta: Biochar, Art + Restoration

Students will work with Sean to explore the concept of reciprocity through the creation of anthropogenic soil known as Terra Preta.  The biochar produced from this process has two benefits. First, it will become the charcoal material students will use to create a series of drawings. Second, the soil produced through the biochar process will be used to benefit the ecology through specific plant choices at Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center, benefiting wildlife and providing food and medicine that has recently disappeared from the area due to human activity.  Class time will also be spent journaling and writing. We will explore the food web and the human place within it, various possible routes to carbon neutrality, carbon sequestration, and local production of food, along with indigenous practices. The plan is to be adaptive to circumstances and opportunities as they present themselves in responsiveness to the environment.

This class is happening in partnership with Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center and a portion of the class will be held at the Nature Center as well as the Art Colony’s Studio 21.
