Introduction to Katazome: Japanese Stencil Dying

Explore this centuries old Japanese textile art process that has elements of both printmaking and painting. Katazome uses non-toxic materials such as rice paste resist, soy milk, and natural pigments. Students will design and cut their own stencils and apply these patterns to fabric using rice paste resist. Then, Kit will provide instruction on how to paint designs using a rich selection of natural pigments. The group will also discuss alternatives to traditional materials and tools. Creations can be incorporated into quilts, wearable art, or other fiber art projects.
