Writing the Natural World: Prose and Poetry

Do you love to read and write about the natural world and your place in it? In this two-day cross-genre class, we’ll study foundational elements of environmental and personal writing in the forms of poetry and prose. Through close readings of exciting work about the natural world by contemporary poets and essayists—Kazim Ali, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, and Elizabeth Rush, among others—this class will teach you how to write vivid nature poetry and prose inspired by your life. Together, we’ll read-as-writers and write from prompts in class. You’ll leave with a greater knowledge of free verse, micro-memoir, and personal essay, and also of the role of setting, narrative structure, and voice, and other core aspects of lyric poetry and creative nonfiction.
