Winter Reading Groups

Come together with other artists, art appreciators, and book lovers this winter! Participants will check out or purchase their book and then meet on the first date to get to know one another and discuss an overview of their book. The second session will be used to continue the conversation, and the third will serve as a wrap up for all attendees.

Groups will meet on January 30, February 6 & 20. Two groups are scheduled to meet in the morning from 10 am – 12 pm, and two in the evening, from 6 – 8 pm.

Morning Reading Groups | 10 am – 12 pm

Dancing with the Gods by Kent Nerburn with Lin Salisbury

The New Earthwork edited by Twylene Moyer & Glenn Harper with Ruth Pszwaro

Eudora Welty wrote, “One place understood helps us understand all other places better.” The New Earthwork is a compilation of more than fifty essays that speak to how sculptors and sculptural practice are at the leading edge of helping us to understand place, ecological and social innovation, and how the earth acts as a creative partner. It is filled with examples of eco-artists who are not afraid to tackle difficult questions and who are actively contributing to the reinvention of infrastructures; artists who are familiar with their local geography and who have a high degree of ecological sensitivity.

Evening Reading Groups | 6 – 8 pm

Landscape and Memory by Simon Shama with John Books

The boreal forest is a key part of the northern landscape and of our sense of place. Participants will discuss the forest and its place within art, specifically looking at the second chapter of Simon Shama’s, Landscape and Memory as a jumping off point. John will facilitate discussion around a series of questions, including what is the boreal forest in myth, history, and art? And, how do representations morph over time to serve the changing needs of the state, the people, and art philosophies? The group will also reference expressionist sculpture, the art of Lawren Harris, and the Group of Seven.

Dæmon Voices: On Stories & Storytelling by Philip Pullman with Rose Arrowsmith DeCoux

Philip Pullman writes, “After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.” In a series of entertaining essays and speeches, Pullman explores perspective, language, patterns, imagery, and the magic of telling compelling stories, drawing examples from his trilogy, His Dark Materials.
