Mini-class: Japanese Stab Bound Books

Traditional stab binding is a popular choice for beginning bookbinders. The supplies are easily available; just paper and thread. But the artistry and variations of various traditions from Japan, Korea and China gives students a chance to try different decorative and structural sewn bindings to create beautiful and practical notebooks and sketchbooks. The morning session will be used to construct at least three different sewn bindings using traditional Japanese papers for covers and the text blocks. The afternoon will be dedicated to creating a hardcover binder to protect the collection and to teach basic bookbinding skills. All supplies and materials will be provided.
