Drawing in the Present
The 19th and 20th centuries produced many innovative approaches to image-making. Learn about these various methods and the re-evaluation of mimesis which opened both philosophical and pictorial directions creating varieties of artistic movements, including impressionism, cubism, expressionism, geometric abstraction, pop art, among others. Ryuta will introduce many different techniques to drawing previously established by the Master of Modern art such as automatic drawing, blind contour drawing, Analytica cubism, and the Sol Lewitt method. And students will gain an expanded perspective of the possibilities. Ryuta will also touch on how artists mentally position themselves in relation to their works. To accomplish this rather challenging task, students will be given a point of departure on which to expand and contemplate. This class is designed for students with little or no drawing experience.
