Design Decisions

It has been Ellen’s passion to take the thrown pot beyond the wheel—out of round—while holding fast to the restrictions that usefulness imposes. Students will practice techniques associated with this type of exploration, including carving, cutting, additions, paddling, and more, all while exploring the choices a potter makes, often unconsciously, that radically affect the overall presence and resolution of the piece. Students will acquire a richer vocabulary of self-expression and, upon finishing, everyone will gain a deeper excitement about continued investigations of the altered pot. Prerequisite: Foundational clay and wheel-throwing experience.
