Spitbite Etching with Copper Plates

Spitbite etching is a process of painting acid directly on a copper plate surface to create an image that can be printed onto paper. The acid bites wherever it touches the plate, showing brushstrokes, drips, and dots. Also known as a spitbite-aquatint, the finished print can resemble ethereal watercolor or ink washes. A ferric-based spitibite recipe also means the process is safe for studio use. Students will learn to prep a copper plate surface, coat the plate with a fine layer of rosin for etching with spitbite, and etch and print. Other printmaking issues, including preparing paper, print registration, and press setup will be covered as well.
